Choosing The Right Juicer

Juicing has become very popular these days.  And you have probably seen tons of information on social media and the web in recent years.  Juicing really does have great benefits.

So...do you want to start juicing?  Are you feeling clueless as to what juicer is the best for you?

There are so many misconceptions around juicing and buying the right juicer.  I am going to help explain the difference between the two types of juicers that are available today - the centrifugal juicer and the slow masticating juicer.  It is important to focus on quality and yield if you want to get the most out of your juicer.

The Centrifugal Juicer

These juicers, commonly available in retail outlets, are the most affordable to purchase. Juice is extracted by pulverizing fruit and vegetables against a round cutting blade that spins very fast against a metal strainer.  The centrifugal force generated by the spinning motion of the cutting surface separates the juice from the pulp.

These juicers generate more heat than slow masticating juicer.  There is the misconception that centrifugal destroys the enzymes in the food, however, the truth is that enzymes are destroyed at 118 degrees and the centrifugal does not reach anywhere near that high.  And...considering that you are throwing in cold fruit and veg from your fridge, the blade is actually keeping a lot cooler than expected.

Unfortunately, this juicer does speed up the oxidation process, which means the juice cannot be stored, you need to drink the juice immediately if you wish to benefit from the nutrients.

PROS CONS

Fast juicing Not well-suited to juicing leafy greens, grasses, sprouts and herbs

Affordable Yields less juice (produces a wet pulp)

Easy to use Fast spinning blades produce heat, affecting quality of taste and speeding up oxidation process

Reduces food preparation time as many accept larger fruit and vegetable pieces Higher juice separation and foaming

Noisy due to grinding and cutting action

Not very strong or durable and short warranty

of normally 1 year

Cold Press Juicers

These operate via a masticating (chewing), cold press method. It operates at a lower speed and gently compresses the fruit and vegetables to 'squeeze' the juice out. Although costly, the slower and thorough extraction rates produce a high quality great tasting juice, with higher yield, helping you get the most out of your produce.

Although these juicers cost more, they are durable and use less fruit and veg since it extracts more juice. The juice can store in the fridge in an airtight jar, for best quality, drink in 24 hours.

While some are concerned that not getting fiber through juicing is not healthy, I would suggest simply taking a tablespoon or two of pulp and mixing it in your glass.  Do try to source organic produce.

PROS CONS

Excellent extraction of juice from leafy greens, grasses, sprouts and herbs Higher initial cost

Higher juice yield of up to 14 to 30% Longer food preparation, as smaller food pieces are required for their narrow chutes

Juice lasts longer with enzyme integrity keeping for up to 72 hours if stored in airtight jar

Lower speeds means less heat, preserving more nutrients and enzymes

Minimal juice separation and foaming

Some models offer other food processing functions, such as being able to make nut milk, nut butter, sorbet, pasta and ice cream

Pressing action is quiet.

Slightly higher pulp in juice

High durability and long warranty often 10 years

The Queen of Greens: Blood Cleansing and Detoxifying Kale Juice

healthambitions

This is another one of my favorites that I make daily along with my carrot juice. Green juice is great for detox and very energizing.

The high chlorophyll content makes kale a very healing juice for the blood. It is rich in flavonoids that control indigestion, inflammation and stress.  It helps lower bad cholesterol levels.

Ingredients:  (try source organic)
x1 apple
x1 lemon
x1 celery stalk
x4 kale leaves
3 inches cucumber
1 inch of ginger

* A teaspoon of good healthy fat eaten before drinking your juice will help to increase absorption of nutrients (raw organic cream, raw butter or avocado)

Let's look at the benefits of kale:

  • Bone Health:   It's high in calcium content helps to increase bone density, and build healthy bones.
  • Brain Health:  Omega 3 in kale helps delay damage to brain cells due to high blood sugar in people who are diabetic or obese.
  • Cancer:  Kale contains indole-3-carbinol, this boosts the health of DNA and lowers the growth of cancer cells.
  • Cholesterol:  Kale reduces the bad cholesterol levels.  It is more effective when juiced with parsley, green apples and lemon.  Lemon helps to increase the absorption rate of nutrition by up to five times!
  • Detoxifying: Isothiocyanates found in kale, when broken down to glucosinolates, helps to regulate detoxification activities in the body cells.  A regular intake of kale juice helps our body detoxify at a genetic level!
  • Haemoglobin:   The high content of chlorophyll helps to improve the haemoglobin level in one’s body.  The chlorophyll molecules are closest to human’s haemoglobin molecules, making it one of the best juices for people who are anemic.
  • Inflammation:  Kale is highly alkaline, and its high content of vitamin K helps improve blood circulation, reducing chronic inflammation.
  • Muscles:  Kale has protein which is more bio-available to the body than compared to meat protein, making it an important vegetable in a vegetarian’s diet.
  • Skin:  It' a great source of calcium, vitamins A, C, K and phytonutrients, all nutrients for good healthy skin. Kale is one of the richest sources of lutein, and contains beta-carotene, and both improve our skin’s elasticity and firmness, keeping it healthy.
  • Vision:  Kale contains a high concentration of carotenoids (zeaxathin and lutein).  These ingredients  protect our eyes against ultraviolet lights, and the high levels of anti-oxidants help to defend the retina against free radicals.
  • Weight Loss:  Regular consumption of kale juice will promote weight loss.  Drink a green juice with kale, daily, to help melt your fat away!

Kale is called the "Queen of Greens".  Include kale in your diet.

The Ancient Healing Herbal Tonic: Indonesian Jamu

Jamu is an incredible healing and super detox tonic that can treat a myriad of illnesses and diseases.  The power lies in the active ingredient, curcumin, in the turmeric. I like to make a batch of three and keep it in the fridge for the week.

When drinking this tonic, or any time when having turmeric, it is advisable to take it with a teaspoon of coconut oil or with raw egg (egg only if it is pastured grassfed, supermarket free range is not truly free range and full of salmonella bacteria).  Why? Because these healthy fats make the curcumin bioavailable to your cells, otherwise you would not be able to absorb it.

Ingredients (use organic for best results)

5 to 7 inches turmeric root, peeled and cut into chunks
5 to 7 tamarind pods, or 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
3 inches of ginger
Juice of 2 lemons
1/2 cup raw honey
2 quarts water
*add cinnamon stick if desired

1) Remove the skin of the turmeric and ginger and chop up and place on medium heat in a pot with 2 quarts water and boil for 30 minutes.
2) Then take tamarind, removing the seeds, place it in a cup with a little hot water and stir into a paste.
3) Add tamarind to turmeric water with juice of two lemons and boil for another 10 minutes.
4) Take mixture off heat and allow to cool for 30 minutes before adding the honey (do not add raw honey when hot as this destroys the honey making it unhealthy like sugar)
5) Strain the mixture;  or if you prefer a stronger tonic simply blend up the ginger and turmeric with a hand blender or place all in a blender.
6) Your Jamu is now ready to drink.  **You can also take some and place it in glass jars with screw on lids and keep in a dark cupboard for three days to ferment to create healthy bacteria.  Once fermented, store in the fridge.

Healing Benefits of Jamu:
  • Turmeric: antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, liver strengthening, detoxifying
  • Ginger:  antioxidant, relieves nausea and indigestion, natural pain killer. Relieves inflammatory conditions - joint aches, menstrual cramps, arthritis and intestinal irritability
  • Tamarind: rich in vitamin C, natural preservative and antioxidant, relieves constipation and digestive problems
  • Lemon:  antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting, weight-loss, digestive aid and liver cleanser. Contains citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene that promote immunity and fight infection.
  • Raw Honey:  full of live enzymes, alkaline-forming, counteracts acid indigestion, amylase enzyme predigests starchy foods. Mixed with ginger and lemon it relieves nausea and supplies energy

The Miracle Juice: Carrot Juice

homehealthyrecipes
Carrot juice, because of its many healthy benefits, is frequently called the "miracle juice." Many people suffering from various ailments have found that adding carrot juice in their diet has greatly improved their health. I like to make a batch for the day and store it in an air tight jar in the fridge.

A friend introduced me to carrot juice two years ago.  He was consuming a number of carrot juices a day to heal lymphoma cancer, along with a special vegetarian diet he was following from a natural healing therapy called Gerson Therapy.  He cured himself after two years, all natural, no pharmaceuticals!

Once I experienced the benefits for myself, I really got hooked on carrot juice, and so it can be quite frustrating when I am unable to source my organic carrots.  I use the Oscar DA1000 slow masticating juicer and store my carrot juice in an airtight jar if I don't drink it immediately.

Ingredients:  (source organic at a local farmer)
x10 carrots
x1 apple
*cucumber can also be added to increase the volume if you wish

* A teaspoon of good healthy fat eaten before drinking your juice will help to increase absorption of nutrients (raw organic cream, raw butter, avocado, or coconut oil)

Here is a list of benefits of carrot juice:
  • It contains the largest source of vitamin A, than any other fruit juice, and contains beta carotene
  • It provides an important source of dietary fibre
  • It contains important nutrients such as calcium, phosphorous, iron, sodium, potassium, vitamin B complex, and as mentioned - mostly vitamin A
  • Carrot juice is a therapeutic agent used for over 150 years as an ancient practice
  • It is reported to contain healing properties that have proven to treat varied diseases
  • It makes your skin glow. Complexion problems can be eliminated with the intake and digestion of needed potassium in carrot juice to help neutralize excess acid to the skin
  • The vitamin A in carrot juice helps the liver flush out toxins from the body - toxins that cause complexion problems
  • A cup of carrot juice promotes healthy digestion
  • It also regulates blood sugar levels
  • It helps you feel full for a longer period of time on relatively few calories
  • It improves your eyesight.
  • It helps you build a natural UV line of defense for your skin against free radicals from UV light

So...get a juicer and start juicing carrots now!  Make sure you source organic. You can add 1 to half an apple per serving.

The Super C Fat Burner!

livewellworryless

Along with a healthy lifestyle high in leafy greens, a variety of vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, and berries; lots of water and some exercise, this juice will do you well in keeping lean.  Your skin will be beautiful!  It's packed with vitamin C!

My hubby and I like to enjoy this after dinner.  Some may prefer it in the morning after breakfast.   It is great after a meal because it aids digestion.

Ingredients:

1 Grapefruit   (pink or white. I prefer pink)
1 Orange
1 Lemon
2cm Ginger  (a chunk to give a nice kick!)
Add a small sprinkle of cayenne pepper (speeds up metabolism)
(Always use organic ingredients when available)

You have two options:

1) Juice It:  Peel all and put it through the juicer as I do,  or even better...
2) Blend It:  Peel all and place in the blender.  This is great for fiber benefits.  The inner white pulp has phytonutrients for amazing healing benefits, you get more of this through blending  *You may want to add a little filtered water or ice blocks to thin this out.

Benefits:

Grapefruit:  Promotes weight loss.  One grapefruit has over 200mg of fresh Vitamin C, making it an ideal breakfast fruit.  It's available year round.  Helps dissolve in-organic calcium that has developed around joints, thanks to organic salicylic acid, making it great for joint pain or arthritis.  Awesome liver tonic.  Aids digestion.  Rich in lycopene (the red color/pigment) and limonoids, which help to prevent the occurrence of tumors and cancer. These two compounds are hard to find in other fruits and vegetables but appear in abundance in grapefruits.
Oranges:  Promotes weight loss. Vitamin C.  Prevents cancer.  Lowers cholesterol and high blood pressure. Has cardiovascular benefits. Treats arthritis.  Proper brain development.  Keeps sperm healthy. Relieves constipation.  Prevents kidney stones.  Maintains a healthy skin.  Protects against infections.  Strengthens immune system.
Lemons:  Promotes weight loss.  Vitamin C.  Digestive aid.  Promotes immunity and fights infection.  Anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, antioxidant. Alkalizes body.  Detoxes liver and gallbladder.  Treats acne.  Healthy skin. Hydrates lymph system.
Ginger:  Thins blood. Freshens breathe.  Anti-inflammatory.  Free radical protection.  Lessens depletion of glutathione.  Boosts immune system. Helps digestion.  Helps headaches, migraine, arthritis and asthma.  Relieves blockages from menstrual cramps.  Antioxidant.  Eliminates intestinal gas.  Protects against colorectal cancer.  Induces cell death in ovarian cancer cells.

Did You Know?

* The Ancient Egyptians believed that eating lemons was an effective protection against a variety of poisons, and recent research has confirmed this belief.
* Grapefruit is great for weight trainers who are trying to get ripped up; it will control your hunger and allow your body to use the carbohydrates you eat more efficiently.
* A teaspoon of cayenne powder in a glass of warm water will stop a heart attack in its tracks.
* For acne, at bed time, put some drops of fresh lemon juice on a cotton bud and apply to the spots. Leave overnight and then wash off.  It will burn a little initially but will ease up.

Nourish Your Body!

Enjoy!
