The Healing Art of Reflexology

The History of Reflexology:

The World Health Organization states that Reflexology is considered to be one of the “fastest growing alternative therapies in the world today!”

It is believed to have been spread from the East to the West by the Roman Empire.  Some think it is about 4000 to 5000 years old, since evidence of this has been found in a Physician's tomb in Saqqara, Egypt.  Some believe it to be as old as acupuncture, from evidence dating back in China.

Reflexology was introduced to the United States in 1913 by William H. Fitzgerald, M.D. (1872–1942), an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Fitzgerald claimed that applying pressure had an anesthetic effect on other areas of the body.

Reflexology was later modified in the 1930s and 1940s by Eunice D. Ingham (1889–1974), a nurse and physiotherapist.  And, it is in fact the Ingham method that I use in my practice.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is based on the principle that reflex zones on your feet or hands - containing millions of nerve endings - correspond to organs, glands, systems and parts of the body.

Reflexology works on a similar principle to acupuncture where the body is divided into 12 pairs of energy zones (Meridians).  When these meridians are blocked we become unwell.  Reflexology encourages the flow of vital energy through these meridians.

How does it work?

Reflexology is a science of applying pressure with the thumbs and fingers on these reflex points, in order to bring about balance an equilibrium (homeostasis).

Reflexology pinpoints tender areas, giving a clue as to which organs are sluggish. These areas carry toxins like cellular waste products, uric acid, pesticide residues, and other chemicals that the body cannot easily eliminate.  The toxins settle along meridian zones causing interference with the energy flow to the organs. Reflexology helps to eliminate these toxins in various ways: runny nose, coughing, sweating, diarrhea.  Detox symptoms may last up to three days.

Reflexology stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, to help bring about healing.  The body has a unique ability to heal itself.  One simply needs to find out where the imbalance is, and natural therapies help us with this; because natural balance cannot be forced, as the body has it's very own temperament and unique formula.

What to expect in a session?

On your first consultation, your Reflexologist may ask you about your medical history, health issues, lifestyle and diet.  The practitioner will apply pressure to your feet, using their thumb and forefinger, to identify which areas of your body aren't functioning properly, and treat accordingly.

Sessions usually last 45 minutes to 1 hour and focus on the soles of your feet, or hands if your feet are too ticklish or injured.  You may need to do five or six sessions to treat specific health conditions.

What are the healing benefits?

True healing takes time, it is not instant, it is harboured and grows long before one experiences symptoms.

When we take into account all factors of life, we can bring about true balance and healing on a Holistic level.  Holistic balance is achieved when we address the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of our lives.

Reflexology:

  • Is great for relaxation
  • Relieves stress, tension and anxiety
  • Improves sleep
  • Improves circulation
  • Supports recovery from illness and surgery
  • Improves overall wellbeing by balancing all body systems
  • A preventative therapy
and more......

Who can do Reflexology?

Reflexology treats the whole person, not just the symptoms.  Reflexology is beneficial for babies, children and adults.  An increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonizing the body.  Reflexology combined with good nutrition and an active lifestyle can bring about great healing!

*Pregnant women do need to ensure that they find a practitioner who is qualified in Reflexology for pregnancy.  I do not currently provide this.*

Reflexology has helped me sleep better. It has also helped me with my lower back problems. I also found that after my 3rd session i had a bit more energy and allowed me to be more actice. I reccommend reflexology as an alternate therapy for pain sufferess or if you need a energy reboot.
