Homemade Organic Toothpaste Recipe

Why you should make your own?

Harmful ingredients in toothpaste:

  • Sodium fluoride: a by-product of aluminum manufacturing, also found in rat poisons and industrial pesticides. Ingesting 1/10 of an ounce of fluoride can kill a 100 pound adult.
  • Triclosan:  the EPA classifies it as a pesticide, it poses a risk to human health and the environment. Scientists categorize it as a chlorophenol, known to cause cancer in humans.
  • Sodium laurel sulfate:  a detergent and cleansing agent.  It can damage eyes, irritate skin and affect breathing.  It accumulates in the heart, liver, lungs and brain for up to five days. Mixed with other chemicals sls transforms into nitrosamines, powerful carcinogens that cause the body to absorb harmful nitrates.
  • Propylene glycol:  Material Safety Data Sheets for propylene glycol warn that the chemical can be rapidly absorbed through the skin, prolonged contact leads to brain, liver and kidney abnormalities. The EPA won’t allow its workers to handle propylene glycol without wearing rubber gloves. And to think this is in toothpaste and health care products?
  • DEA:  disrupts hormones and forms cancer-causing nitrates.  According to the University of Illinois skin exposure to DEA can lead to increased risk of liver and kidney cancers.

You will need:

  • A glass jar either 125 ml or 250 ml with an airtight lid
  • 5 tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • 5 tablespoons organic cold pressed coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of stevia leaf powder (a natural sweetener)
  • 1 to 2 drops of pure peppermint oil (buy the oil at Essential Herbal Products)

*Get the baking soda, stevia, and coconut oil from Dischem, they are quite affordable.

  1. Place the baking soda and stevia in the jar, mix these dry ingredients
  2. Now add the coconut oil and and mix well
  3. Add just 1 or 2 drops of peppermint oil (no more, it is very strong)
  4. Give it a good mix, and you are ready to go!

*I have tested this and it is great! You should get between 100ml to 125 ml. Toothpaste is normally 75ml. The mixture does not need to be refrigerated.

Health Benefits of the Ingredients:

  • Baking Soda/Sodium Bicarbonate: in its natural form, baking soda is known as nahcolite, which is part of the natural mineral natron. Natron, which contains large amounts of sodium bicarbonate, has been used since ancient times with the Egyptians. It is a plaque busting tooth and gum paste, very effective in killing bacteria.
  • Stevia: is extremely useful in oral hygiene formulations like tooth pastes, mouth washes etc. Stevia Herb is a highly effective anti bacterial and anti fungal and therefore it is observed that dental decay and bleeding gums are cured over a certain period of time. *It makes the toothpaste look green.
  • Coconut oil: is known as a natural antibiotic and it has been found to destroy the bacteria that cause tooth decay. This is a must have in your kitchen cupboard. I will share its many, many uses and beauty benefits with you soon! I cannot live without it!
  • Peppermint oil: plays a strong role in maintaining dental hygiene. Its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties promote complete dental health. Peppermint oil fights off bacteria, preventing bad breath and tooth decay. It also holds the gums and teeth in place. This makes it a common ingredient in various dental care products including toothpastes, mouthwashes and breath mints.

Enjoy!

You can try out different flavors, with different essential oils, each time you make this. Here are some ideas:

1) cinnamon, or
2) cinnamint (mix cinnamon and peppermint)
3) tea tree and lemon (antibacterial for extra hygiene)

For essential oils be sure to go to the 'Bodhi Jewels' page on my website and contact Sue Clark or Christine Andrews from Essential Herbal Products.
