Lemongrass & Peppermint Cleaner & Household Freshener

It's year end!  Looking forward to the holidays?  It's a good time for a little spring cleaning around the house, and a look at better lifestyle choices too.

We expose ourselves to so many harmful household chemicals, that in fact, are very ineffective in doing the job.

Lemon juice, white vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide are the best options for cleaning.  They are proven to have more antibacterial and antifungal qualities than the chemicals you currently use; and are safer.

DO YOU KNOW:  Hydrogen peroxide is the only germicidal agent composed only of water and oxygen. Like ozone, it kills disease organisms by oxidation!  Hydrogen peroxide is considered the worlds safest all natural effective sanitizer.

Add fragrance to your homemade products with pure essential oils, much safer than parfum which is toxic and used in commercial products.

Here are some ideas on how I create my own homemade products:

Bleach disinfectant for toilet and floor:
* 500ml spray bottle filled with water
* a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide (use the 3% food grade solution)
* add 25 drops peppermint essential oil
* add 25 drops lemongrass essential oil

This powerful bleach cleaner will keep your loo super clean!  After washing and flushing spritz with the freshener below for lasting fragrance.  Add some of this to hot water and use to mop floors, for super hygiene and fresh fragrance.

Toilet freshener/air freshener/surface cleaner:
* 500ml spray bottle
* fill with white vinegar
(distilled is great or buy the regular 5ltr, it will last you all year!)
* add 25 drops peppermint essential oil
* add 25 drops lemongrass essential oil

The vinegar enhances the oils, leaving you with great fragrance! Two or three spritz in the loo will freshen the whole bathroom leaving a lovely lemon mint fragrance.   Put some in a small bottle to carry with you if you don't like using toxic air fresheners at work.  Take some of this mixture and mix 1 part to 3 parts water to dilute and use for wiping down counters at home, great insect repellent and freshener.

Cleaning grout:
* 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 1 part water

Scrub with an old toothbrush for super white grouting.  Quick and effective, doesn't damage grout like other chemicals.

Unblocking drains:
* First pour into bath/basin/kitchen drain - half a cup of baking soda (also known as bicarbonate of soda)
* Then pour white vinegar down the drain

It creates a fizzing action that cleans and unblocks.  You may have to repeat this three times if there is a bad blockage.  If you do this regularly, it will prevent bad blockages.

These homemade products are more effective and cheaper than commercial products.  If you want to purchase some essential oils to make your own products mail me on organics@bodhichi.co.za.
